16:8 fasting for beginners

16:8 intermittent fasting splits the day into a 16-hour fasting window and an 8-hour eating window. You eat all your meals inside the 8 hours and drink only water, black coffee or plain tea for the other 16. A common pattern is a last meal at 8:00 PM and a first meal at noon the next day.

How the window works

The number before the colon is the fasting hours; the number after it is the eating hours, and together they add up to 24. On 16:8 you fast for 16 and eat within 8. Pick the eating window that fits your day, many people skip breakfast and eat noon to 8:00 PM, but a 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM window works just as well. The fasting window calculator does the arithmetic for any last-meal time.

Easing into it

If you currently eat across 12 hours or more, going straight to 16:8 can feel abrupt. Shortening the eating window by an hour every few days is gentler: 12:12, then 14:10, then 16:8. That is the same ladder the protocol picker offers, and there is no prize for hitting 16:8 in week one.

Staying consistent

Consistency day to day matters more than the exact clock time. Being half an hour early or late does not undo the day. Better Fasting tracks the streak rather than policing the boundary, and its weekly schedules let you set a shorter fast for a day you know will be difficult without breaking the run.

A note on the research

This is general information about how the schedules work, not medical advice, and it makes no claims about weight or health outcomes. Talk to a clinician before changing how you eat, especially if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, take medication for blood sugar or blood pressure, or have a history of disordered eating.

For the evidence itself, peer-reviewed reviews of time-restricted eating include de Cabo & Mattson in the New England Journal of Medicine (2019) and a Nature Reviews Endocrinology review of circadian eating (2022). Guidance from a national health service or a registered dietitian is a good starting point.
